Intern, Community Stabilization

  Job Description
 

NeighborWorks America seeks a full time, paid Community Stabilization Intern for Spring/Summer 2013.  The Community Stabilization Intern is responsible for supporting the corporation’s Stable Communities Initiative.  The Stable Communities Initiative provides training, tools, and resources to nonprofit organizations and their public and private partners to stabilize communities dealing with foreclosures, vacancy and disinvestment.   Areas of programmatic focus include affordable housing development, comprehensive community development, and support for the implementation of the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program. 

Specific responsibilities of the position includes updating the StableCommunities.org web site, blog and e-newsletter with research, analysis of program and policy trends related to foreclosure, residential real estate, community planning, community stabilization, and local and federal place-based policy.  The intern may also participate in the planning and delivery of workshops and webinars on neighborhood stabilization topics, assist with community stabilization grant reviews, and support other program priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Research, analysis and outreach within the NeighborWorks Network and the broader housing and community development field in order to capture program and policy trends related to foreclosure, residential real estate, community planning, community stabilization, sustainable economic and housing development, and local and federal place-based policy.
• Deliverables based on this research and analysis include dissemination of best practices and case studies through and content development of in-person and online trainings.
• The intern may also participate in planning workshops and webinars on neighborhood stabilization topics, analyze community stabilization grant projects, and complete other website projects.
• Responsibilities will be roughly split 80 percent program related and 20 percent administrative. There is some flexibility to structure the work plan to meet the career development goals of the intern as well.
• All deliverables will support the business unit in its mission of helping the network and the community development field respond to foreclosure and stabilize neighborhoods.

SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Regular interaction with NeighborWorks® America staff and management from other units and divisions.
• Contact with NeighborWorks® Organization staff and vendors.

 


  Skills Required
 

The preferred intern will be a recent graduate or graduate student in urban or regional planning, community development, real estate development, public policy, journalism or a related field.  An advanced undergraduate may also be accepted, or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

The intern must be a self-starter who can work in a fast-paced environment without extensive supervision and is motivated by the mission of the corporation.  Strong written and verbal communication skills are preferred, and a recent writing sample will be requested.  Experience creating or maintaining websites is a plus.  The intern will be selected via employer interview.

PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS
• Fast paced working environment, extensive computer usage.
• Limited travel may be required (less than 10%).
