Unleash the Power of Your Board! Rejuvenate and Realize Your Board’s Potential
Thursday, December 16, 2004
New Orleans, LA • Marriott New Orleans

Unleashing your board's power means maintaining the delicate balance of relationships with the community, staff and funders, while focusing on the mission of the organization. This Symposium will address challenges faced by board members, provide examples of successful approaches to board governance and focus on bringing your board to the next level of excellence - with tips and tools to help you gain support for new ideas and methods.

We will examine how to develop and sustain integrity in the board's three key relationships - with community, staff and funders - to enable your organization to make a more powerful impact. While there is no "one size fits all" approach to board governance, there are many techniques to build, rejuvenate and optimize a board's capacity - regardless of whether your board is currently struggling or setting a strong example for others. You will work with other board members and experts in the field to develop creative ways to inspire your board so that they become a community of learners eager to discover and implement new ways to improve their performance. You'll work with fellow practitioners to answer these critical questions about board development:

  • How do I assess the current state of my board?
  • What approaches have others used to build or rejuvenate their boards?
  • What are the critical elements essential to the success of my board?
  • What tools and techniques can we use to maximize impact and success?
  • How do I get my board "on board" to implement these new strategies?

Optional workshops from 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. are open so you can discuss in-depth hot topics explored throughout the day. While some topics will be determined based upon issues that arise throughout the course of the day, some topics may include:

  • Board self-evaluations,
  • Measuring your board's impact,
  • Conducting a more effective meeting,
  • Keeping the balance among your volunteer board work, your job and your personal commitments.
