Two New Courses Focused on Community Development in Native Country

NA170 Developing and Strengthening Native Financial Institutions
This interactive three day course is for those seeking to develop a new Native CDFI or to strengthen the capacity of an existing Native CDFI. We will guide you through the initial and intermediate stages of CDFI development and activities such as: organizational development, staff and board development, policy development, loan product development, capitalization, marketing, creating strong development services for your community and much more. Wwe will review a number of case studies detailing best practices and lessons learned from tribal leaders who have been engaged in this work over the past decade. Limited technical assistance may be offered to attendees who complete the full three-day course. This course is taught by First Nations Oweesta Corporation.
NA171 Bring Money Back to Your Community: Making VITA and EITC Benefit Your Clients!
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs are intended to assist low- to moderate-income families make the most of their tax dollars. Unfortunately, individuals in Native communities do not always claim the EITC they have earned, or are targeted for high-cost paid tax prep services. We will share research that shows how Native communities are "targeted" for services that drain the EITC dollars from the community, while demonstrating the significant increase that EITC and VITA can bring back to our local Native communities. We will provide valuable information on how to access the dollars unclaimed through EITC, as well as ways that Tribal leaders can be engaged to help support the campaign. We will highlight methods for launching successful EITC campaigns, and the lessons communities have gained in the process. We will also share step-by-step information on starting a VITA program in your area. Limited technical assistance may be offered to attendees who complete the full two-day course and are looking to start a campaign/program in their area. This class is led by First Nations Oweesta Corporation.
A limited number of scholarships are available for eligible organizations to attend this training. Scholarships are funded through support from the First Nations Oweesta Corporation via a US Housing and Urban Development, Rural Housing and Economic Development grant.
