The demographic surge created by the baby boomers will add more individuals to the ranks of the elderly than ever before, and the current foreclosure crisis and economic recession have created even more pressing challenges for lower-income seniors. Because of this, almost every nonprofit housing provider and community organization will be involved in senior housing — by design or by default. Ensuring Safe, Healthy Homes and Communities for Our Seniors will review current trends and present real-world opportunities to meet the growing demands for affordable housing for our older Americans. It will focus on what nonprofits and municipalities need to do to prepare for the country’s burgeoning senior population.
The symposium will feature the insights of thought-leaders and expert practitioners, and will offer specific information on how housing and services programs can increase economic security and improve the quality of life for lower-income seniors. Join colleagues, peers and partners for thought-provoking and practical solutions for engaging seniors as essential leaders and participants in building your community, as well as issues and opportunities for seniors as homeowners and renters. Topics covered in the symposium include:
- Successful programs that make homes for seniors safer, more affordable and an asset to the community
- Effectively engaging senior residents on boards of directors, and in neighborhood associations, community projects and other volunteer efforts
- Available resources for effective rehabilitation, retrofitting and weatherization
- Housing counseling services for seniors, including the benefits and risks of home equity conversion mortgages (HECMs)/reverse mortgages, and how to offer these products and/or counseling to your clients
- Partnering with health and social service providers to ensure your seniors are receiving the care they need to be productive members of your community
- The design and benefits of multi-generational housing
- Identifying and accessing available resources for your senior programs
- Successful models of affordable housing for seniors
This day-long symposium will bring together renowned innovators from the community development field to explore ideas, test assumptions, and share successful, real-world strategies for creating healthy, vital communities that include seniors as a growing and important segment. Whether you currently offer senior housing or partner with agencies that offer health or other services for seniors — or you realize the need to focus on this growing segment of your community — you will leave the symposium energized with fresh ideas to enhance your programs.
