Gulf Coast Community Leadership Institute

June 19-22, 2008 • New Orleans

NeighborWorks America is offering for the first time a special Gulf Coast Community Leadership Institute (CLI) in New Orleans. This event will bring together 350 residents from a variety of Gulf Coast grassroots and nonprofit organizations and provide them with training, opportunities for relationship building, and leadership development.

The Gulf Coast CLI is an integral component of NeighborWorks America’s commitment to supporting organizations engaged in rebuilding theGulf Region Map Gulf Coast following the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our goals in this work are encompassed in a comprehensive Power of Ten Initiative, which includes the specific goal of supporting 1,000 residents to strengthen their leadership in the region.

Information About the Gulf Coast CLI

Participants are predominantly emerging community, resident, and volunteer leaders of low- to moderate-income communities. Participants attend exclusively in teams of six, which includes up to five residents (key volunteers or board members) and the organization’s principal staff (typically the executive director).

Each invited organization sent a designated Resident Team Coordinator (RTC) to the advance training November 30-December 1, 2007. Aside from learning about the CLI, the RTCs also provided input for event content and guidance in team selection.

At the CLI, each team prepares an action plan to address a priority community issue. Each team then submits their Action Plan application for an award consideration. The CLI agenda consists of opening and closing plenaries, a series of community and organizing leadership workshops, networking opportunities with Gulf Region resident leaders, and site visits to local neighborhoods that are working toward positive change.
