ImageTaking Shared Equity to Scale:
An Innovative Method to Grow and Preserve Affordable Homeownership

NEW! RESOURCES FROM THE SYMPOSIUM

In many markets, the affordable homeownership challenge is growing. Inflation and cost increases are critically affecting buyers, local jurisdictions, and homebuilders. “Shared equity” approaches – inclusionary housing, land trusts, deed restrictions, co-ops, shared equity mortgages – are growing in popularity as a strategy that uses the investment of public resources to achieve both affordability AND to extend that affordability to future buyers and renters.

Experienced community developers, homebuilders, lenders, city housing staff and policy leaders convened in Portland, Oregon in December for a full-day symposium about the endeavors to expand homeownership opportunities for moderate and lower-income families and individuals.  The symposium included a keynote address by Henry Cisneros, former HUD secretary and chairman, Cityview and a plenary by Howard Brodsky, CEO, CCA Global Partners .

This strategic symposium announced the results of new research on market demand, local policy, development capital, mortgage capital, and local business capacity. Participants learned about what some experienced community development practitioners are doing to grow and preserve affordable homeownership and had the opportunity for open dialogue and in-depth discussions during breakout sessions on topics such as market segments, public policy, local business models and Shared Equity 101.
