Earn University Credit –
Community Economic Development Educational Opportunities

NeighborWorks America has a partnership with Southern New Hampshire University’s School of Community Economic Development. This partnership is designed to enhance educational and credentialing opportunities for practitioners in the community economic development field.

Portable Credit Program
The partnership offers a portable credit program in which Southern New Hampshire University's (SNHU) School of Economic Development (SCED) will provide six graduate credits to those who earn a Professional Certificate from NeighborWorks Training Institute and register with the SCED during or before completing their Professional Certificate. The portable credits are transferable to other universities and educational institutions. This program is structured as follows:

  • SCED will provide six graduate credits (equal to two courses) to persons who complete and are awarded an NeighborWorks Training Institute Program of Study Professional Certificate (“POS Certificate”), subject to the following terms and conditions:
    • A person seeking to obtain portable credits must register with SCED during or before the semester when the POS Certificate is expected to be awarded, and be assigned a SCED faculty advisor. SCED registration may be done in conjunction with and through the registration process for a NeighborWorks® Training Institute.
    • SCED will create two courses in its curriculum for each POS Certificate, such that course credit will be awarded in the community development domain covered by the POS Certificate.
    • Students must pay for portable credits prior to receiving them (the cost per portable credit hour will be at prevailing SNHU rates).
  • The portable credit(s) are transferable to other universities and educational institutions and can be used towards an advanced degree in related disciplines, with the value of any such credit(s) being subject to the target university’s or educational institution’s rules and regulations governing credit transfers.

Master's Degree Portfolio Credit Program
The collaboration also includes a portfolio credit program open only to students currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Community Economic Development at SCED of SNHU. The portfolio credit program is structured as follows:

  • SCED will provide six graduate credits (equal to two courses) to those who have earned a Professional Certificate ("POS Certificate") in one of eight Programs of Study from the NeighborWorks Training Institute since calendar year 2000.
  • The credits are awarded at no additional cost to holders of POS Certificates and may be applied as electives towards a Master's in CED at SNHU.
  • The awarding of these credits will result in advanced standing, which allows a Master’s in CED student to either (1) reduce the number of courses taken each semester, or (2) take a full load of courses for the first 3 semesters of the Master’s in CED program and then reduce by half the number of courses that the student is required to take in the last semester. This allows the student to do the final semester as an online semester that only requires the student to travel to the SCED campus once (rather than normal four times) during that semester.
  • If a Master’s in CED student elects to use his/her advanced standing:
    • He/she is required to register for two required courses for the fourth semester and will be eligible to graduate in May with his/her class;
    • The two required courses may be taken online via Distance Education;
    • He/she must travel to the SCED campus to make his/her final project presentation at the end of the fourth semester; and
    • SCED will award the student a $500 tuition scholarship to be used to defray the costs of his/her fourth semester.
