NCHEC Professional Certification
Policies and Procedures

NCHEC currently offers four professional certifications for homeownership practitioners:

  • Pre-purchase Homeownership Education
  • Post-purchase Homeownership Education
  • Homeownership Counseling
  • Foreclosure Intervention and Default Counseling

All certifications are valid for three (3) years from the date of issuance.

How to Obtain NCHEC Certification
The first step for a homeownership practitioner to become NCHEC-certified is to complete the appropriate training education requirements. Learn more about the training requirements for each NCHEC Certification.

Once required training and examination is completed, the Application for NCHEC Certification [PDF] must be signed and returned to NCHEC. Upon review and verification of requirements, NCHEC Certification will be issued with a certificate displaying an official seal.

How to Maintain and Renew NCHEC Certification
Each NCHEC certification is valid for three (3) years from date of issuance.  If your certification is expired or expiring, in order to maintain a valid NCHEC Certification:

  1. Complete within three (3) years from date of issuance, a minimum of 30 hours (10 hours per year) of continuing education units (CEUs) on topics related to (pre- or post-purchase) homeownership education, counseling, real estate or mortgage lending. See a list of acceptable courses to obtain CEUs.

  2. Upon completion of required CEUs, submit a copy of the Application to Renew NCHEC Certification [PDF] along with the NCHEC Continuing Education Verification Form (All continuing education credits must be submitted using this form). Both documents must be signed and returned to NCHEC.

  3. Beginning in 2008, in order to receive NCHEC certification renewal, practitioners must agree to adopt the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling by signing the National Industry Code of Ethics and Conduct. To learn more about the Standards and download forms, visit www.homeownershipstandards.com.

Upon review and verification of requirements, NCHEC Certification will be issued with a certificate displaying an official seal.
