Foreclosure intervention counseling training prepares homeownership practitioners with the knowledge and skills to successfully deliver specific housing counseling assistance to delinquent and foreclosure clients. In 2008, NeighborWorks America through the NeighborWorks Center for Homeownership Education and Counseling (NCHEC) will administer training programs to bolster foreclosure counseling competencies among service providers.

Additionally, to further qualify practitioner expertise in foreclosure counseling, NCHEC offers foreclosure professional certification. The Foreclosure Intervention and Default Counseling Certification demonstrates a thorough understanding of foreclosure-related topical areas to ensure that counselors are prepared to deliver these specialized services. This rigorous certification is recommended for only those counselors with at least one year of experience in loss mitigation and/or default counseling (must pass an online prerequisite exam to enroll in this course). To take advantage of this valuable training:

  1. Consider your level of experience
  2. Consider the venue, referring to NTI and place-based training cities (scholarship priority will be given to foreclosure and homeownership counselors in the region of the PBT)
  3. Consider the full scope of training needed to enhance skills (e.g. homeownership courses outside the areas of foreclosure)
  4. Apply for the scholarship at the venue of your choice as early as possible to ensure availability
  5. Apply for only one (1) scholarship at a time, per training event

The National Industry Foreclosure Counseling Standards are now an integral component of the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling and National Industry Code of Ethics and Conduct.
