Maria Garciaz is a native of Utah, born and raised in Salt Lake City. She is the executive director of Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS). NHS is a private nonprofit housing organization created in 1977 to reverse the decline of neighborhoods experiencing blight. Garciaz has been involved with Salt Lake NHS since 1982. Initially as a volunteer and later joined the organization as the youth project director in 1986, she was appointed executive director in 1990. She has been involved in grassroots organizing for 30 years and working with youth since 1976. She spent several years as a family counselor, school counselor, juvenile probation officer and television executive producer She has a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Utah and a master of education from Utah State University. She is responsible for raising an operating budget of 1.5 million a year, $6.5 million for programs and managing a loan portfolio of $10 million. She is on the board of directors of American Express Bank, FSB, Utah Commission on Juvenile Justice, serves on advisory committees for Washington Mutual, US Bank, FannieMae and former board member of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank’s Salt Lake Branch, and the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee.
