ML260 Financial Oversight for the Board of Directors

The role of a board treasurer is one of the most important — and also one of the most challenging — in an organization. Especially in light of recent changes in legislation and the environments of the three sectors of business, not-for-profit and government, this role has taken on greater importance and scrutiny. This in-depth course is designed for, and with input from, board treasurers in community development organizations. Whether you are a new board treasurer or a seasoned pro, you'll gain the necessary tools to meet the ever-increasing challenges facing board treasurers today. In an interactive three days, you will:

  • Better understand the financial roles and responsibilities of the nonprofit board.
  • Learn how the recently enacted Sarbanes-Oxley Act affects your role as Treasurer of the Board.
  • Learn about fraud detection and how to prevent fraud in your organization.
  • Get an update on financial reporting requirements unique to the nonprofit environment.
  • Discover which financial reports are necessary for the financial oversight of your not-for-profit organization.
  • Develop techniques for implementing strategic cash management and investment plans.
  • Share and receive guidance on your role in the annual audit, management of nonprofit risk, and compliance with NeighborWorks America’s capital grant agreement.
  • Use key financial indicators to understand the financial health of your organization.

This course also incorporates time for peer sharing and networking to improve your skills and confidence as a board treasurer with a not-for-profit organization.

Note: While board treasurers may be given priority enrollment for this course in accordance with the timing of their registration, other board members and executive directors from all organizations are also welcome — and encouraged — to attend.
