CB900 From Surviving to Thriving: Communities Transformed by the Power of Resident LeadershipCommitted neighborhood leaders – residents who have volunteered their time and employed improvised tactics to save their neighborhoods against incredible odds – have gradually developed the strategies that have turned isolated, neighborhood-specific efforts into the collective national movement we now know as “community development.” Following significant progress over decades, our communities have changed significantly, but we are continually confronting new problems. Unfortunately, we also find ourselves encountering previous challenges that have taken new forms. Today, significant issues include the new or vastly expanded presence of diverse ethnic groups and languages, transformed family composition, unemployment rates at levels once unthinkable, and a deeply troubled financial industry. However, we now have professional community development organizations with sophisticated knowledge and skills, extensive partnerships with the public and private sectors, seasoned community leaders, and a rich history from which to draw critical lessons. From Surviving to Thriving: Communities Recharged by the Power of Resident Leadership is a day-long symposium designed to facilitate an honest reexamination our roots, allowing us to learn from 50 years of community leadership in neighborhood revitalization, and to gain inspiration from the voices of community leaders to refine our focus and direct our strengths to the challenge. This compelling event will bring together innovators in the field and grassroots community leaders as well as professional practitioners and researchers, who will present the latest thinking and share successful, real-world strategies for effective community-led action and the ongoing development of community leaders. Interact with colleagues, peers and partners for a thought-provoking day of shared learning and skill-building, as we explore the indispensable role of resident leadership in neighborhood revitalization and community development. Together, we’ll work to better understand critical issues such as: The forces shaping the transformation of communities and community leadership How to create an environment for true partnership among community leaders of all sectors The power of resident leadership in creating healthy communities Proven approaches and new strategies for training and nurturing emerging leaders The challenges of reconciling conflicting interests within communities What different forms resident leadership and community engagement must adopt to be effective in the vastly different communities we serve. Come engage with your peers and to re-energize your work as we rediscover the existing power and untapped potential of resident leadership. You’ll take away a refreshed professional network, renewed sense of purpose, a deeper understanding of the relationship between national and local forces, and strategies you can apply to maximize your impact.Course length: 1 Days Tuition: $ 220 Course counts toward a professional certificate: No |
