AP901 Symposium: Achieving Excellence in Community Development: Investing in Leaders, Returning ResultsIn 2002-2003, 43 of the most respected and seasoned community development executive directors in the country were engaged in an intensive and challenging performance-enhancement program called Achieving Excellence conducted by Neighborhood Reinvestment, Harvard University, and a team of executive coaches. Neighborhood Reinvestment dared the Achieving Excellence executive directors to: • Define a challenge for which the solution would drastically change their organization for the better, and then develop solutions for it over 18 months;• Succumb to scrutiny and peer review; • Expose themselves to cutting-edge thinking about leadership and management from Douglas K. Smith (acclaimed author and consultant), and Harvard University; and • Commit to a rigorous 18-month process of producing results. Neighborhood Reinvestment invites you to learn about the results of this pilot program, Achieving Excellence, and to explore ways to apply lessons, strategies and approaches to your own organizational and community development challenges. This special symposium will feature nationally recognized experts, such as renowned authors Douglas K. Smith and Christine Letts, as well as intimate, in-depth details from the first cohort of 43 executive directors. These directors will discuss their many challenges and accomplishments: • How one director raised more than $100 million in new capital for affordable housing, primarily to assist new homeowners;• How several organizations offered new or additional services to more than 7,000 households by increasing organizational efficiency and capacity; • How an executive director designed loan products and systems to compete effectively with predatory and subprime lenders; • How several organizations collectively increased by 10,000 their affordable rental units; • How a cohesive senior management team streamlined its operations by consolidating and refining its subsidiaries and creating a smart, seamless, efficient operation positioned to double its impact over the next 10 years; • How an executive director, realizing the need for a creative approach to resource development, instituted a program to capitalize on resources from individual donors and created a stable, flexible income stream for the organization. The phenomenal results of the program Achieving Excellence are having an impact both locally and systemically. The lessons of the program have been numerous and dramatic. Join the participants for this one-day symposium. Experience the results — first-hand from participants, program coaches, and faculty — as they relate to your own issues.
