Speaker Profile: Karl BrenKarl Bren headshot

Karl Bren is President of GreenVisions Consulting. GreenVisions provides consulting services relating to the application of green building and sustainable design, especially in single and multifamily affordable housing. He is also a nationally known conference speaker and conducts workshops on green building and sustainable design.

He is a LEED Accredited Professional with the US Green Building Council and has been involved with green building and sustainable development for over ten years.

Karl currently serves as the Executive Director of EarthCraft Virginia, a non-profit that administers the EarthCraft residential green builder program in Virginia. EarthCraft was created by Southface Energy Institute and the Homebuilders Association of Atlanta in the late 90’s and has certified several thousand single and multifamily housing units.

Karl is the founder and was President of the Virginia Sustainable Building Network (formerly, Virginia Housing and the Environment Network), a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion and implementation of green building and sustainable design principles and practices in Virginia from 1994-2004.

He is a founding Board member of the James River Green Building Council and the Better Housing Coalition, a progressive non-profit community development corporation committed to green building and sustainable design. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Conservation Network. He was appointed to the Governor’s Energy Policy Advisory Council by Governor Tim Kaine in 2007. Karl has received many awards and recognitions including the Ukrop Community Vision Award for 2007 and the Emerald Award for being a green hero of the Planet given by Style Magazine.

Karl holds a Master of Urban Affairs from Virginia Tech and has served as Adjunct Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond where he teaches courses on housing and the built environment with a focus on green building and sustainable design.

While serving as Non-Profit Affairs Director with the Virginia Housing Development Authority, the agency became one of the first housing finance agencies in the country to integrate green building principles as part of their programs.
