HO907 Symposium
Weathering the Storm:
Stabilizing Communities
in the Wake of Foreclosure
Cincinnati, Ohio • May 7, 2008
Duke Energy Center |

The battle against foreclosure continues to rage. As adjustable rate mortgage loans continue to re-set, every aspect of the homeownership industry is experiencing the impact. While the war on foreclosure is still very much a reality, many are beginning to look beyond current market conditions to what the future holds for the next generation of homebuyers.
Foreclosed properties left vacant or abandoned are destabilizing communities across the country. Speculators, absentee landlords, declining property values, and decreasing tax revenues are a few examples of the devastation these properties are creating. The growing inventory of real estate owned (REO) property by lenders and servicers are generating new ideas about what can be done with excess inventory that will help preserve communities and have a positive effect on the availability of affordable housing.
Join us at the NeighborWorks Training Institute in Cincinnati for a full-day symposium to discuss the current landscape and community impact and then explore plausible ideas and solutions to respond to the need. Topics of discussion include:
- What does the tightening credit market mean for future homebuyers?
- Can real estate owned properties revitalize neighborhoods blighted by foreclosure? Does the increased supply of REOs represent a community development opportunity?
- Can partnerships between municipalities and nonprofit organizations provide scalable solutions to the post-foreclosure crisis?
- What options are available for community-based organizations to contend with REO inventory in their community?
- How do counseling agencies provide assistance to families post foreclosure?
