Interfaith Housing Alliance and
NHS of Asheville Featured in Fed Publication
|
|
Interfaith Housing
Alliance, a new NeighborWorks member, is featured in Marketwise,
a community development magazine published by the Federal
Reserve Bank of Richmond. Interfaith, started by community
religious leaders in 1990, uses self-help housing and other
strategies to create affordable housing in Western Maryland.
Jim Upchurch, president of Interfaith, says the "real
heros" in the work are resident volunteers who build
their homes. “... In addition to their jobs, they work
30 hours a week whether it’s in the heat of summer or
the cold of winter."
In the same issue
of Marketwise, network member NHS of Asheville, North
Carolina, is commended for working with the city of Asheville
to turn around the Montford neighborhood. According to NHS
of Asheville’s executive director, Chris Slusher, “Montford
was drug-ridden, red-lined and no one wanted to be in it.”
During its 15 years in Montford, NHS rehabbed 14 homes that
would have been demolished, built 22 new single-family homes,
produced 11 new apartment units and developed a mixed-use
commercial/ residential project through low-income housing
tax credits and public/private

| House
and Senate Approve a Long-Term Continuing Resolution |
On September 29, the House of Representatives formally
introduced HJ RES 107, a continuing resolution which funds
all federally-appropriated programs (including Neighborhood
Reinvestment Corporation) from October 1 through November
20. This is an acknowledgement that the Congress will
not be able to complete its work on spending bills until
after the November elections, during a "lame-duck"
session.
House Appropriations Chairman C.W. Bill Young (FL) had
wanted to pass all 13 appropriations bills in an omnibus
measure prior to November 2. With this stopgap spending
measure, the Congress recesses earlier and representatives
return to their home districts to campaign.
Please contact Neighborhood Reinvestment's Office of Public
Policy and Legislative Affairs if you have questions or
concerns. mailto:mbutchko@nw.org

| Pew
Hispanic Center Report Cites Widening Wealth Gap for Blacks,
Hispanics |
| A
report issued today by the Pew Hispanic Center indicates
a widening gap in the net worth of whites compared to
black and Hispanic families. As reported in the Washington
Post, as of 2002, the median Hispanic household had
a net worth of $7,932 and the median black family had
$5,998. The median white family, by contrast, had more
than 10 times either amount -- $88,651. The report concludes
that minority families by and large do not benefit from
the passing down of assets to the next generation. Consequently,
they have far fewer assets to pay for such major expenses
as retirement and college tuition, despite strides in
narrowing the income gap. A press release and report are
available at the Web site of the Pew
Hispanic Center. |
