NFMC RELEASES FIFTH CONGRESSIONAL REPORT
On May 28, NeighborWorks America released its fifth report to Congress on NFMC Program activity. The report covers counseling activity reported by program Grantees and counselor training provided by NeighborWorks between March 1, 2008 and January 31, 2010.

The report also details the NFMC Program’s role in President Obama’s Making Home Affordable program and the successes and challenges counselors face when helping homeowners avoid foreclosure. Highlights of the report include:

  • 871,333 homeowners received counseling during the reporting period
  • 6,314 scholarships provided to foreclosure counselors
  • Descriptive statistics about clients served through the program
  • Successful counseling strategies, including the importance of early intervention
  • The challenges counselors face in the current economic environment

ROUND 4 NFMC GRANTS AWARDED APRIL 16, 2010

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NATIONAL FORECLOSURE MITIGATION COUNSELING PROGRAM GRANT RECIPIENTS! WE ARE PLEASED TO BE WORKING WITH YOU TO MAKE FORECLOSURE COUNSELING MORE READILY AVAILABLE IN COMMUNITIES OF NEED ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

On April 16, 2010, NeighborWorks® America, administrator of the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program, announced grant awards totaling over $59.5 million to 131 organizations. View news release.

FORECLOSURE COUNSELING TRAINING

NFMC Funds are being used to build mortgage foreclosure and default mitigation counseling capacity of counseling organizations. NeighborWorks is providing:

  • Scholarships to attend NeighborWorks Training Institutes
  • Regional, multi-course Place Based Trainings sponsored and hosted by
    NeighborWorks America
  • Place-Based Trainings sponsored by NeighborWorks America and
    hosted by HUD Intermediaries and/or state Housing Finance Agencies
  • Three on-line foreclosure counseling/program courses

ROUND 4 NFMC COUNSELING FUNDS

On December 16, 2009, President Obama signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010 (PL 111-117) which appropriates $65 million to NeighborWorks America to continue the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program. This appropriation provides funds for foreclosure counseling, training for foreclosure counselors, and administrative expenses associated with running the NFMC program. These funds were awarded to State Housing Finance Agencies, HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Intermediaries, and NeighborWorks Organizations with demonstrated experience in foreclosure counseling. Local Housing Counseling agencies could not apply directly but can receive sub-grants from State Housing Finance Agencies and/or HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Intermediaries. Individual homeowners could not apply directly but can find a foreclosure counselor at www.findaforeclosurecounselor.org.
