Chase, NeighborWorks Train Detroit Area Nonprofits in Financial Education
for Free Through June 23

Chase

Detroit — Chase and NeighborWorks America, the nation’s leading trainer of nonprofit community development professionals, will offer 40 nonprofit representatives free training in financial education during a three-day workshop through June 23 at Chase Tower in downtown Detroit.

The course — Financial Fitness: Teaching Financial Management Skills — provides counselors with the essential components of an effective financial education program and offers tools to help participants design programs that meet the needs of their community.

“We want to increase the effectiveness of homebuyer training that local non-profit groups offer to residents throughout the region,” said Christine Kageff, Chase Community Relations manager in Michigan.

Chase endorses the National Industry Standards for homeownership education and counseling. By incorporating these standards, non-profit organizations help promote an accepted level of performance for homeownership education and counseling nationwide.

“This reassures Detroit area consumers that the organizations helping them follow consistent, professional standards for homeownership services, or Homeownership Done Right™,” Kageff said.

Course participants represent U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development- approved mortgage counseling agencies in Metro Detroit. The NeighborWorks course is especially critical in today’s economic climate in helping rebuild neighborhoods and providing the knowledge necessary to help prepare clients for successful, long-term homeownership.

“NeighborWorks provides industry experts, materials and interactive methods to present the courses, and Chase employees provide insight and expertise from a local perspective,” Kageff said.

Begun as a pilot four years ago, the program receives funding from a JPMorgan Chase Foundation grant to NeighborWorks America. About a dozen Chase-sponsored training programs are planned nationally this year.

“Thanks to the support from Chase, NeighborWorks America is able to train and equip 40 counselors from the Detroit area with the knowledge and information needed to provide financial education to their communities. Financial education is crucial to our nation’s communities, and we are grateful to Chase for helping to make this training possible,” said Jayna Bower, director, NeighborWorks Center for Homeownership Education and Counseling.

NeighborWorks America’s homeownership and community lending training arm, the NeighborWorks Center for Homeownership Education and Counseling (NCHEC), has trained and certified thousands of non-profit group representatives in homeownership, foreclosure intervention and financial education.
