African-American history is filled with important milestones and breakthrough achievements. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has selected historical themes to feature through 2011. This year's theme is "from slavery to freedom," tracing the history of the African diaspora in the Americas.
Statistics on African-American achievements are featured on the U.S. Census site. At this site, you can learn the latest count of Black military veterans (2.4 million), revenues for Black-owned businesses ($88.6 billion), Black homeownership statistics (46 percent of Black households lived in owner-occupied homes in 2005) and much more.
NeighborWorks America strives to bring the dream of homeownership into reality for all underserved populations. According to an article in the Boston Globe, African-Americans have the lowest rate of homeownership in the nation. Throughout the year, NeighborWorks serves both at the national and community levels (with over 235 community development organizations) to address homeownership issues.
