Even with its colorful past and high-tech present, South Central
Texas has an increasing demand for low-income housing, particularly
among its large immigrant population. According to a recent HUD
report, "There is less than one subsidized housing unit
in Texas for every five families who qualify for and need subsidized
housing."
NeighborWorks organizations throughout the state help to fulfill
this need. This issue of bright ideas focuses on central Texas
(the Hill Country), the areas known as the South Texas Plains
and the Valley in the far south. It highlights seven NeighborWorks
organizations in five cities: Austin, San Antonio, Carrizo Springs,
Laredo and Mission.
Housing Texans is a big job, but these organizations are making
impressive gains.
