Two Network Affiliates Win MetLife Awards

November 12, 2003 -- Two NeighborWorks organizations on opposite sides of the country -– Neighborhood Housing Services Inc. of Boise, Idaho, and Urban Edge Housing Corp. of Roxbury, Massachusetts -– have been selected as 2003 winners of MetLife Foundation Awards for Excellence in Affordable Housing.

NHS/Boise won second place (and $15,000) in the supportive housing category for its Homeward Bound program. Homeward Bound is a transitional housing program that provides homeless and at-risk families with clean, comfortable housing, social services, and referrals to community resources.

Urban Edge won third place (and $10,000) in the property and asset management category for redeveloping Westminster Court Apartments. Westminster Court, a complex of three, three-story buildings around a large interior courtyard, was renovated in 1995, as a result of a strong tenant association, to address the risks of physical deterioration and decreasing value.

The awards were presented at The Enterprise Foundation’s annual network conference in Baltimore in early November.

The two first-place winners were A Community of Friends, in Los Angeles, in the supportive housing category, and Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, in Chicago, in the property and asset management category. They each received $25,000.
