Colorado Nonprofit Joins NeighborWorks Network

October 18, 2004- Neighbor to Neighbor, Inc. (N2N), a Fort Collins, Colo., nonprofit, was officially chartered as a member of the NeighborWorks® network of community development organizations.

Neighbor to Neighbor was founded and incorporated in 1970 by a resident activist from a lower-income neighborhood in northeast Fort Collins. A family with many children on her street fell behind on its mortgage and was going to lose its home to foreclosure. This effort spawned a movement of volunteers who created an agency in 1970, the legacy of which lives on today.

The organization’s mission is to empower people and promote housing opportunities through education, advocacy, counseling and partnering with the community. Neighbor to Neighbor fosters positive outcomes for people along all points of the housing continuum, from homelessness through home ownership.

Today N2N has grown to 20 employees and serves all of Larimer County and parts of Weld County. It has a satellite office in Loveland, Colo. In addition to comprehensive housing counseling, with which it began, the organization now administers all grants for the homeless in the region, owns and manages transitional and multi-family rental properties and is notably embedded in and supported by its community.

N2N’s new executive director, Wendie Robinson, came on board in April from a successful ten-year tenure as director of the Larimer County Food Bank.

In December 2003, Neighbor to Neighbor was honored with the Spencer and Julie Penrose Award for “Outstanding Not-For-Profit in the State of Colorado for 2003” in the prestigious El Pomar Foundation's Awards for Excellence Program. The agency was selected for this award from 33 other finalist non-profit organizations from around the state representing 11 categories. In addition, N2N was named as a finalist in the self-sufficiency category for the second year in a row.

Membership in the NeighborWorks network will provide N2N with access to grants and training opportunities.
