Nashville Townhome Project Honored by HUD
January
12, 2004 — Affordable Housing Resources (AHR), a NeighborWorks
organization, struck gold with its new 29-unit townhome project
in downtown Nashville. The organization and its "Row 8.9n"
project won the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) Secretary's gold award in the 20th annual Best in
American Living competition.
"It's rewarding to do a project that not only creates
affordable housing but also challenges and changes the entire
community," said AHR Executive Director E.D. Latimer. "It
was fun working with the city as a partner—you don't
win these awards alone, you've got to have good partners."
The 29 townhomes are located in Hope Gardens neighborhood, one
of Nashville's downtown neighborhoods. Nashville Mayor Bill
Purcell hailed the project as an integral part of the transformation
of Hope Gardens into "a neighborhood where anyone can live,
and anyone will want to live." The townhomes on 8th Street
have a view of the state capitol; those on 9th Street have an
open ‘loft apartment' style.
The Best in American Living award program is sponsored by the
National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Professional Builder
magazine, and HUD. The awards ceremony will take place on Jan.
18. "It's the biggest award we've won,"
said Latimer. AHR, however, isn't resting on its laurels.
According to Latimer, the organization's newest project—a
28-unit mixed-income housing project located behind the Row 8.9n
townhomes—is halfway finished.
