National NeighborWorks Week 2010: New Jersey

Newark Mayor Cory Booker Joins NeighborWorks America to Kick off National NeighborWorks Week and Launch the Loan Scam Alert Campaign

Newark Mayor Cory Booker Gives a Loan Scam Sign a Thumbs-downOn June 5, Community Outreach Day in Newark, NJ, Mayor Cory Booker joined NeighborWorks America and the Newark-Essex Foreclosure Task Force to kick off National NeighborWorks Week and the Loan Scam Alert Campaign.

The day started with 10 teams of volunteers in 10 different locations going door-to-door to educate residents about home loan modification scams that are causing at-risk homeowners to lose their properties. The teams then gathered together for a press conference with Mayor Booker and other city officials near the site of a vacant, foreclosed house in Newark’s West Ward. The home, lost to its owners by a foreclosure rescue scam, will be redeveloped into a community park.

"This is a great program that gives real hope and not the false hope that the scammers are providing," said Mayor Booker during the press conference. "We encourage people not to be susceptible to people promising you everything when your home is endangered by foreclosure. The local agencies that participated today are all great examples of organizations that are committed to hope and can help you without cost and still obtain great results.  We appreciate their efforts."
