National NeighborWorks Week 2010: New York
NHS of New York City Takes Over Times Square to Kick Off NeighborWorks Week 2010
The staff, board members and volunteers of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHS of NYC) took over Times Square on Friday, June 4 to raise awareness about loan modification scams and to kick off National NeighborWorks Week, a week-long celebration of the accomplishments of the NeighborWorks network.
Below large electronic billboards with the Loan Scam Alert and NHS of NYC messages, volunteers handed out information to pedestrians in the heavily-trafficked area of Times Square. Six tents were also set up in the area, where passersby could sign up to receive more information on the Loan Scam Alert Campaign, NHS of NYC and its affiliates NHS of Bedford-Stuyvesant, NHS of East Flatbush, NHS of Northern Queens, NHS of the North Bronx, NHS of the South Bronx and NHS of Staten Island.
“This outreach serves as a good model for how local groups can mobilize to push out the loan scam alert message,” said Barbara Floyd-Jones, program manager, Local Support for Foreclosure Solutions, NeighborWorks America. “Not every city has a Times Square, but they all have high-traffic intersections.” Floyd-Jones added that National NeighborWorks Week and June's National Homeownership Month are good times for nonprofits to share the loan scam alert message in their communities.
