NeighborWorks America is proud to sponsor the annual Dorothy Richardson Resident Leadership Award.  This individual award is named after community resident leader Dorothy Richardson, the founder of the Neighborhood Housing Services of Pittsburgh (1968), the organization that served as the model for the development of the NeighborWorks Network.

Goals of the Dorothy Richardson Resident Leadership Award

  • To recognize, honor, and promote the accomplishments of resident volunteer leaders who work to create a positive change in their communities;
  • To highlight best practices of resident leadership that increase the involvement of a diverse group of their  peers in the communities in which they live and work;
  • To inspire similar service in others;
  • To showcase the NeighborWorks network’s effective and creative resident leadership talent.

Eligibility Criteria:
Eligibility criteria for this individual award are as follows:

  • At least 12 years old and above;
  • Worked or lived in a NeighborWorks organization’s service area;
  • Volunteered directly with a NeighborWorks organization

Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria for this individual award are as follows:

  • Demonstrated active involvement in the community;
  • Demonstrated the impact of their accomplishments and success of their volunteer leadership in the community in which the  NeighborWorks organization operates;
    (examples: assisted in community stabilization efforts, contributed significantly to either promoting foreclosure prevention or increasing awareness of foreclosure scams, offering aid to a family and/or community that experienced the devastating effects of foreclosure, assisted in promoting a “green” lifestyle with environmentally friendly solutions,  increased the number of active residents; developed partnerships with residents, governments and businesses; formed neighborhood associations or built effective relationships to bring together segments of the community through community building and organizing strategies.)
  • Demonstrated a continuing commitment to support and promote resident leadership that can enhance or complement the NeighborWorks organization’s  initiatives

Nominations
Each NeighborWorks organizations may submit one nomination. Nominations will only be accepted through GrantWorks from October 20, 2009- December 31, 2009. NeighborWorks America will award eight winning NeighborWorks organizations with $5,000 and resident volunteers receive various privileges. The award winners will be announced on March 15, 2010.
