Edna Bynoe has held numerous leadership positions and received various awards recognizing her lifelong activism in Boston’s Orchard Park community. One achievement that stands out is how Bynoe facilitated the transformation of her community, a neglected public housing development riddled with blight and crime. Her advocacy work helped the Orchard Gardens Resident Association obtain Hope VI grants funds to create a mixed-income development designed to deter crime. The residents demanded and received co-ownership with Madison Park Development Corporation and Trinity Financial, the developers chosen by the resident association. This $58 million HOPE VI renovation was completed in 1999. Also, Bynoe was instrumental in acquiring a community elementary school to serve this new development. In 2003 the Orchard Garden Elementary School opened, one of only three new schools built by the Boston school system in the last 10 years. Today, Bynoe continues her advocacy work by developing young leaders through the Orchard Gardens Resident Association.
