2008 Award Winner

Brian D. Montgomery
Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Brian MontgomeryAs Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Commissioner Montgomery has been one of the nation’s leading voices on housing issues. One of Commissioner Montgomery’s primary responsibilities at HUD has been the modernization of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Under his leadership, FHA has been an important part of the federal government’s national response to the current economic and mortgage crisis. In 2007, Commissioner Montgomery introduced FHASecure, a new mortgage product designed to help homeowners facing foreclosure refinance into safer, more secure FHA loans. And, as part of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, he assumed responsibility for FHA’s new HOPE for Homeowners program, which expanded FHA’s efforts to provide aid to struggling families trapped in mortgages they currently cannot afford.

In addition to overseeing FHA and its $400 billion insurance portfolio, Commissioner Montgomery has been actively involved in the preservation of affordable multifamily rental housing, achieved primarily through mortgage insurance as well as flexible refinancing options. Commissioner Montgomery has also worked extensively with Hurricane Katrina disaster victims, having chaired HUD’s Hurricane Recovery Response Center, and helped to coordinate and secure temporary and long-term housing for affected Gulf residents in 2005. Finally, Commissioner Montgomery is the HUD Secretary’s designee to the Board of NeighborWorks America, where he currently serves as Chair of the Corporate Administration Committee and a member of the Audit Committee.
