Disasters take many forms -- Mother Nature's hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, but also man-made disasters such as fires, hazardous spills and terrorism. With the shock of these catastrophic events dominating the news and seeping into the psyche of our nation, and the apparent failure of our strategies and tactics to meet these crises, Americans are now wondering what citizens, organizations and local governments can do to prepare for the unforeseeable, endure it, and then, proactively reconstruct their communities.
As a first step in the effort to answer these important questions, NeighborWorks America convened a symposium at the NeighborWorks Training Institute in Dallas on April 5, 2006. With participants from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, the symposium generated lively discussion and surfaced a number of important resources.
