United Way of Central Alabama
When the United Way of Central Alabama collaborated with the Southern District office of NeighborWorks America on a statewide capacity building initiative, they included capacity assessments as an option for local organizations. After successfully applying for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding, the United Way engaged Organizational Assessments Services to provide capacity assessments for six organizations throughout Alabama, from Huntsville in the north to Mobile on the Gulf. Their aim was to strengthen local nonprofits serving vulnerable populations statewide.
The timing of the assessments were propitious as work concluded shortly before 64 tornados ripped through the state in the Spring of 2011, months after completion of the assessment process. In particular, Temporary Emergency Services in Tuscaloosa was better prepared to assume a leadership role in responding to the needs of the community.
