NeigborWorks America's Green Agenda: Accomplishments
Below are the activities we have accomplished or are currently undertaking to achieve goals of the green agenda.
- Between 2008 and 2010, NeighborWorks America reduced our organization’s carbon footprint by over 18 percent per employee, almost double our original goal of 10 percent. At the same time, we more than doubled the share of employees who see NeighborWorks as a green organization (from 30 percent in 2008 to 70 percent in 2010).
- Created greener training conferences by steadily improving what we do, what we use, and how we conduct these training sessions. Select items undertaken include:
- Developed Green survey for all hotels hosting the NeighborWorks training institutes.
- Course binders are made of cardboard from recycled fibers.
- Increased e-marketing to reduce printing and mailing of marketing brochures.
- Reused boxes and packing material for shipments.
- Electronic systems for processing faculty classroom , audio-visual set-ups and electronic course updates have reduced paper/fax use by nearly 100 percent.
- Online registration has reduced paper/fax registration by over 50 percent.
- Online testing has reduced paper testing by 100 percent
- New e-learning courses and Virtual Classroom deliver training without requiring carbon-intensive travel
- Created a comprehensive green graining curriculum with over 17 courses, and launched a Green and Sustainable Certificate program to train practitioners in successful strategies for green building, healthy housing, and sustainable business operations.
- Conducted 22 Sustainability Audits of network member organizations, and used the lessons learned to publish a guide to Greening Your Nonprofit from the Inside Out.
- Fully integrated green concepts and priorities into our capital grant programs to support the NeighborWorks network in green building and rehabilitation activities.
