Description: During NeighborWorks Week 2010, CHP staff and community partners teamed up at 9 different locations across Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina to help educate our residents about environmental responsibility and sustainability, while also emphasizing the importance of neighborhood awareness, participation, and improvement. Sunrise Place, a low-income rental community owned and managed by CHP in Tallahassee, Florida, hosted a grounds beautification event during NeighborWorks Week, where a local radio station provided music and deejay entertainment for approximately 25 staff and residents as they collected trash, spread mulch, and planted native flowers and shrubs on the property. The hands-on activities proved to be both fun and educational for the participants, as they learned that native landscapes are ecologically and economically beneficial because they use plants that are suited for a specific climate, resulting in lower maintenance costs while reducing the need for water, fertilizer, and pesticides.
