Leveraging Partnerships to Rebuild from 'Neighborhoods Up'

Gulf rebuilding

Overview
NeighborWorks® America’s response to the destruction caused in the Gulf Coast region by the hurricanes of 2005 and 2008 has been grounded on the principal of rebuilding “from the neighborhoods up.”

Modeled upon our 30-year history of supporting community-based partnerships, our rebuilding initiative supports the foundations of neighborhood rebuilding – the families, organizations, and homes that make up these neighborhoods.

NeighborWorks has opened field offices in Jackson, Mississippi and New Orleans, and we are supporting organizations with grants and investments that will aid 100,000 families with financial counseling, as well as support building or rehabilitation of 10,000 affordable homes in the region by 2010.

To date, NeighborWorks grants of more than $10 million to its partners are helping to build the capacity of these organizations, as well as advance the development of over $150 million in new and rehabilitated single and multifamily units.

A Partnership Approach

Make it Right and NeighborWorks America Partnership

(l-r): NeighborWorks America Southern District Management Consultants, Donna Tally and James Ross; Brad Pitt, actor and founder of Make It Right; NeighborWorks Senior Advisor for Gulf Rebuilding and Green Strategies Thomas Deyo; and NeighborWorks Southern District Director Donald Phoenix

NeighborWorks America and its network organizations have made significant progress in the region working with local partners. Over the past three years, we have developed more than 30 strategic partnerships with local organizations throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Make it Right in New Orleans is one of many such partnerships in the region. NeighborWorks America provides prospective Make It Right homeowners living in the battered lower ninth ward with financial education and homeownership counseling that will ensure each homeowner achieves sustainable homeownership.
